Parent Academy

Welcome OHDELA Parents!

Welcome to OHDELA, the Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy! As an OHDELA parent/legal guardian/study coach, you want the best for your child’s education. Our virtual school inspires minds, engages students and families, and provides a learning experience to last a lifetime. For students to be successful, parents must be closely involved throughout their education. We are committed to helping our students start strong and flourish through their school year. Adapting to online schooling takes time, and you may face challenges. We created this Parent Academy to help you and the student during this transition. We are here to provide support with orientation sessions and training for a successful school year.

As an OHDELA Parent, you are an integral part of your student’s school life

A Parent’s Typical Day:

Parents can expect their time to mirror their child’s closely. Parents of young elementary school children will need frequent assistance during the school day. Tasks include getting their children logged in and started on assignments, answering questions, or helping them move to new subjects. Parents will spend the majority of school time helping their child. Parent involvement of older students may take a more hands-off approach. But, parents still need to be present during their student’s school hours. A parent must stay observant to ensure that the student remains focused, attends live classes on time, and works on school assignments in front of the computer. Your time commitment may vary by student’s learning style.

  • Grades K–5: 5 to 8 hours (example)
  • Grades 6–8: 5 to 7 hours (example)
  • Grades 9–12: 5 to 6 hours (example)

Additionally, parents of all students should check in with the teachers on academic progress and tips they can use to help guide their children through schoolwork subjects, questions, and assignments. As a student learns, advances, and becomes more independent, the parent’s involvement changes but always remains crucial for success.

Daily and Ongoing Support

Keeping your student on-task, focused, and involved in their schoolwork requires daily support. You should help them get signed in, sit at their workspace, or ensure the completion of assignments and homework. Your student will look to you to be their constant support system throughout the OHDELA online school process. Giving support to your student involves you in their assignments and can help with any problems. You should check in regularly with teachers on student progress. Ensuring timely grading, staying updated, and planning activities supplements your student’s schooling.

Preparation

Preparation for the school day is essential. OHDELA asks the parent to help the student prepare for the day’s tasks. Preparation help is essential at the elementary school level. A day may include a test in one subject, a group project in another, a reading assignment, and a live class session. Preparation can help you breeze through the day without missing a thing. Together, the teacher-parent team can help a student be more successful.

“Great school and great teachers. Been with OHDELA since 2005 and have been very happy. My kids are home and getting a good education. I am still actively involved with their education and make sure they are on task. Online schools would not work if parents just want their kids plugged in and walk away. Success depends on the discipline and structure of parents also.”
